Water Graffiti for Peace (2014)

SYNOPSIS:

Created and led public art project engaging over 500 passersby in several outdoor play sessions with Chinese calligraphy and conversations about peace, using large foam-tipped brushes to write in water on the pavement. Collaboration with Chinese calligrapher Mike Mei, five teen artist-researchers, and the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, with funding from the Boston Foundation and the City of Boston Public Art Commission. Collected over 100 video interviews, created website, collaboratively edited 25 interviews at the Chinatown Gate and Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park.

Composed and co-choreographed 30-minute performance piece “Peace is a Woman in a House” for the Lorelei Ensemble, an 8-women vocal ensemble, and Chinese calligrapher Mike Mei, exploring the Chinese character for peace, 安,a roof over a woman, and community, personal and spiritual ideas about peace, drawing from Water Graffiti  interviews.
